The Davis and Elkins College Theatre and Film Program is eager to present a spooktacular performance of “The Crucible.” Performances will be held October 17-19 at 7:30 p.m., and October 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Harper McNeely Auditorium at the Myles Center for the Arts.
Widely considered a masterpiece, The Crucible is a timeless classic that challenges American ideas of power, intolerance and justice. In the Puritan community of Salem, Massachusetts, a servant girl accuses a farmer’s wife of witchcraft. One accusation spirals into many, uncovering a web of bigotry and deceit that changes their lives forever. Among the most produced plays since its 1953 debut, “The Crucible” is both a gripping historical drama and an evergreen parable of contemporary society.
Doug Gabbert stars as John Proctor in the show. When asked for comment on his leading role, said Gabbert, “As for what it’s like playing the lead role, my experience has been very daunting, but enjoyable so far. There’s a large volume of lines that I had to memorize, and the subject material of the show itself stresses the need for the emotion in all our lines to come through. This is the largest role I have ever held to this point, so I’ve been really dedicating time to studying the script. It’s been tough, but the experience has been very fulfilling thus far!”
Amelia Buettner, a freshman who stars in the show, mentions, “Getting back into acting has been a breath of fresh air. I used to enjoy theater so much and I’m glad I got the opportunity to be a part of it again. The theater community at D&E was a very big deciding factor for me when I chose to join. Everyone was so kind and welcoming to me.”
“My character is Mary Warren, which has been a fun challenge so far especially considering I don’t normally play characters like her,” says sophomore Theatre and Film major, Mary Orndorff. The rehearsal process has been great. I love getting to work with the people in this production!”
Assistant Professor of Theatre and Film, Lonnie Martin, offers the following Director’s note, stating, “’The Crucible’ is a classic for a reason. Miller’s script remains a prescient cautionary tale about blurring the line between God’s law and man’s law, and the dangers of being swept up in the political zeitgeist of the moment. Tackling such weighty issues has challenged our students not only as actors, but intellectually. It’s been amazing to watch them rise to this challenge.”
