Davis & Elkins Director of Athletics Patrick Snively has announced the hiring of Eric Sturgis as head men’s and women’s tennis coach.
Sturgis comes to D&E most recently from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he served as associate head coach. Last season, Colby qualified for conference tournaments for the first time and achieved their highest ever national rankings. Prior to Colby, Sturgis served as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Iowa Central Community College where his teams were ranked in the top 10 in the country for the first time and had four nationally ranked players.
“I am excited by the enthusiasm Coach Sturgis has for the sport of tennis and the experience he has,” Snively said. “He has a great deal of success recruiting and coaching and will bring a great skill set to our institution. I am excited to see our tennis programs continue to grow.”
Sturgis has additional collegiate coaching experience from Morgan State University, Western New Mexico University, Nicholls State University, Lindenwood University, Lake Superior State University and Mount Saint Mary College. He was head coach at Western New Mexico, Lindenwood and Mount Saint Mary.
Coach Sturgis also boasts high school and club coaching and club management experience.
Sturgis earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in sports management, both from Eastern Michigan University. He is a USPTR High Performance certified instructor.
Sturgis will reside in Elkins.
