Davis & Elkins College senior education majors recently attended the West Virginia Science Teachers Association annual conference and gained new ideas to bring to their classrooms. The event at Stonewall Resort followed the theme “A Dose of Science!”

Attending the conference were Instructor of Education Danielle Riggins and students Vanessa Collette of Beverly; Katie Dixon of Solon, Maine; Ally Green of Philippi; Caitlin Weese of Beverly; and R.J Weiford of Winfield.

The students participated in breakout sessions and attended a general session to learn about various science topics including luminescence, bridging math and science, understanding the new West Virginia science standards, authentic experiences through teaching science, and communication through science.

“The West Virginia Science Conference offers our pre-service teachers a valuable professional development opportunity to learn about trends in science and network with teachers and presenters from around the state and country,” Riggins said.

Founded in 1985, the West Virginia Science Teachers Association provides support for science teachers’ professional development and has grown into the forum for science education reform in West Virginia.
