Mathematics

Applies to Every Discipline

Mathematics on a chalkboard. Cliché, we know.

Prepare for a successful career in the field or in the classroom.

Mathematics, a vital resource for turning the abstract into the concrete, is a valuable skill across almost every discipline. Whether you choose to major in mathematics at D&E and pursue graduate school or go directly to the workforce to prepare the students of tomorrow, a D&E mathematics education has you covered.

The Davis & Elkins College mathematics program offers two tracks: pure math and math for teachers. Coursework includes a strong foundation in traditional math classes, like linear algebra and calculus, allowing you to build toward finding your niche. Our pure math degree program prepares students interested in graduate school or entering the workforce in fields that utilize math, often by also taking courses that lead to a minor in a related field, such as Computer Science, Finance, Economics, or Chemistry.

Baccalaureate Programs (B.S. & B.A.)

D&E Crest

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

The bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a focus in Pure Mathematics requires 27 hours of specified mathematics courses and 20 semester hours of elective mathematics and physics courses.

D&E Crest

Why Mathematics at D&E

The small class sizes at Davis & Elkins College are a huge advantage for students studying mathematics. Your dedicated professors will provide individualized attention in every class session, allowing you to become more comfortable with the concepts. You can participate in hands-on programs in supportive environments that inspire you to delve into new concepts and gain confidence to present your work to your peers.

You’ll also have the opportunity to be a paid peer tutor in The Naylor Learning Center on campus and in the local community. In addition to assisting others, tutoring allows you to get extra practice and helps you learn the material better to build your logical and critical thinking skills. Internship opportunities and research experiences, primarily through the Capstone course, in which you will choose a topic and work directly with a faculty member. You will learn new skills and deepen your mathematical knowledge, while possibly having the opportunity to present your work at a regional conference.
