What is FERPA, and what are the rights of parents?

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) protects the privacy of educational records, establishes the right of students to inspect and review their educational records, and provides guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings. At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent right to inspect a student’s education record without the student’s written consent.
