Davis & Elkins College President Chris A. Wood, right, thanks Maintenance Technician Steve House for crafting and donating to the College a mace holder and matching table to be used in various ceremonies. The pieces will be debuted at Wood’s inauguration at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30 in Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. The mace is the ceremonial staff carried by the student assembly president in processions. When the need arose for a new mace holder, House built a prototype and then created the true version and table, donating the materials and his time. “It’s what I like to do,” House said of the work, explaining that he’s a craftsman by trade. “I knew they wanted a narrow table, too – which is something out of the ordinary – so I just built it.” Commending House’s efforts, Wood said, “This is an example of the D&E way – using the talents within the College to make an idea a reality.” The Davis & Elkins College mace is fashioned from natural walnut, characterizing the woodlands surrounding the College. The top pewter band bears the Celtic cross, reflecting the College’s Scotch-Irish Presbyterian heritage. A replica of the College seal completes the design. Arthur Roberts, a custom pewterer and glass decorator in Lottsburg, Va., designed and crafted the mace for the College.
