Derek joined D&E as an instructor in the Supported Learning Program and Academic Support Services in August 2013. In this role he provided individualized academic support and classroom accommodations for students with disabilities, though academic skills courses to at-risk students, and developed course and workshop curriculum. In the fall 2014 term, Derek was appointed to his current position as coordinator for academic support.
Research Interests/Professional Activities
Derek is a member of the National College Learning Center Association and the Association for the Tutoring Profession, and a certified professional member of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. He has presented his work at numerous conferences across the county, including the National College Learning Center Association National Conference, the Association for the Tutoring Profession National Conference, the West Virginia University Fall Advisor Workshop, the WVU Advising Roundtable and WVU Resident Faculty Leader Training. In addition, he as served as a semiannual guest lecturer in occupational therapy and religious studies at WVU, and as a panelist at the West Virginia Ocular Albinism Conference and West Virginia Gateway Conference.
In 2008, Derek was selected by Third Ward Elementary School in Elkins as the recipient of their Hometown Hero award for outstanding leadership and service. While attending West Virginia University, he was one of two recipients of the Ken Gray Leadership Award, which honors students for academic excellence and outstanding leadership.
