Declan McGill will start his second season at the helm of the D&E women’s soccer program in 2020. He was hired January 28th, 2019 after working as a volunteer for the men’s soccer team in 2018.
McGill helped the Senators to seven total victories in 2019, while Samantha Cozzolino (Second Team) and Asheli Freed (Honorable Mention) earned all-conference recognition from the Mountain East Conference in the school’s first year in the league. Davis & Elkins handed McGill his first collegiate coaching victory in the school’s 2019 opener against Caldwell on September 8. McGill helped D&E to its first conference win against Charleston (W. Va.), a 1-0 victory at Nuttall Field on September 19, 2019.
In just over one full season, McGill has worked tirelessly to retool the women’s soccer program through extensive recruiting efforts.
McGill returned to Elkins after a three-year stint at Frostburg State from 2015-2017, where he was the assistant men’s soccer coach. While at Frostburg, McGill assisted in all facets of the program, including game planning, recruiting, practice planning, ensuring academic success, and organizing travel. During his time in Frostburg, McGill coached the team to three conference tournament appearances and an overall record of 20-15-3. This fall, in his role as Volunteer Assistant Coach, McGill primarily assisted in tactical development and training.
In addition to his experience on the collegiate level, McGill adds coaching experience at clubs such as FC33, Seneca Soccer Club, and Allegheny Soccer Alliance, as well as overseas experience in his native England. While at Frostburg, McGill served as a Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and has recently worked at the South Preston School as a Health and Physical Education Teacher.
During his career as a Senator (2011-2014), McGill was a captain and four-year impact player, leading the team to a 47-22-6 record during his time in Elkins. McGill was named to both the WVIAC and GMAC All-Academic Teams and made GMAC 1st Team All-Conference during his senior season in 2014. McGill was also given the Joe Carroll ’69 Leadership Award in 2015 and helped the team to an NCAA Tournament Appearance in 2012.
McGill graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in Health from Davis & Elkins College in May 2015. McGill also holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Frostburg State.
“As an alumni of the College, (Declan) understands the strengths of our College and our outstanding soccer history, which will serve him well as he carries on the recruiting process in place. Declan brings not only his strong playing and coaching experience but a contagious enthusiasm and knowledge for the game, which I strongly believe our current women’s team and future Senators will be drawn to,” Jamie Joss, Director of Athletics.
