WBOY - A new addition to The Stirrup Gallery at Davis & Elkins College recalls a time when mastodons, woolly mammoths, and Irish elk roamed the earth.
The Reckling Collection is made up of fossils of extinct animals, known as megafauna, and is currently on display. The collection was named to honor the late Jerry Reckling who left the fossils to the College is his will.
“I will actually let you hold a mammoth tooth, a mastodon tooth, an Irish elk antler. So, I mean, people really get into it. My displays are set up to be informative and educational,” said Special Collections Coordinator Mark Lanham. “You have to get the young people involved so they want to learn.”
An official grand opening of the Collection and memorial service for Reckling are planned for fall. The Gallery is open for tours Monday through Friday and by appointment on the weekends.
