CALHOUN TIMES - What a great weekend to be in Historic Downtown Calhoun, April 29 and 30. Along with the excitement of BBQ, Boogie & Blues, our annual Georgia String Band Festival kicks off Friday night, April 29, 7 p.m., at the Harris Arts Center theater with ‘The Appalachian Ensemble’ from Davis and Elkins College, in West Virginia.

This is a talented troupe of musicians, singers and dancers that will take you on a journey you will not soon forget, with your own cultural history presented in a most entertaining and lively fashion, by young folks studying and cherishing this precious heritage quite seriously.

Come enjoy that dynamic music and dance, which sustained our ancestors through many decades of pioneer life, and now resonating strongly once again, with a new generation, influenced by such efforts as the great film “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” This is where bluegrass and what we now know as country music actually came from, before recording and radio, straight from the porches, barns and hollows of a then-youthful America.
