ELKINS – The Martin Field House on the campus of Davis & Elkins College is getting some much needed repair and a new look with the installation of metal roofing.

Once complete, in mid-to-late August, the slate grey roofing will be complemented with a D&E red trim.

Davis & Elkins College President Chris A. Wood said the $400,000 deferred maintenance project is one of many the College will undertake this year to improve and maintain buildings and facilities.

“Maintaining and upgrading the campus is an ongoing effort,” Wood said. “This project is just one example of our commitment to continue improvements that will serve our students, faculty, staff and the community.”

Last summer, a student-athlete fitness center was installed in the upper level of the building. The 4,000-square-foot area is equipped with new workout equipment featuring the Senators logo. The facility also houses the Seybolt Indoor Golf Academy and Senators batting cages, as well as year-round practice space for soccer, baseball and softball.

While the Murray Sheet Metal Company of Parkersburg completes work, all regular activities scheduled within the building will continue.

Originally dedicated in 1950 as the Memorial Gymnasium, the facility was renovated and re-dedicated in 2010 as the Martin Field House. Through the generosity of alumnus and life Trustee Dr. Thomas J. “Jack” Martin, ’50, and his wife, Helen Louise Martin, the building was dedicated in memory of Jack’s parents, Dewey Edward Martin and Ellice Row Martin Coffman, and his brother Willard Blaine Martin, ’49.

Crews from the Murray Sheet Metal Company install sheets of metal roofing at Martin Field House on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The project is one of many upgrades planned for the campus this year. Work is expected to be completed in mid-to-late August.
