ELKINS - The Mountain Dance Trail, a heritage tourism project of the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, promises to warm up a winter evening with its monthly square dance on Friday, February 10 in Myles Center for the Arts Pit Dance Studio on the College campus. The evening will feature music by Gerry Milnes and friends with square dance calling from Mary Alice Milnes.
Gerry Milnes calls Elkins home and has collected old-time music from throughout the state for the last 45 years. He plays fiddle, banjo and guitar. In 2013, he was honored with the Vandalia Award, West Virginia’s highest folklife honor, and was selected as the West Virginia Filmmaker of the Year in 2006.
“Gerry Milnes has played for hundreds of square dances, has danced at even more and is always ready to play fiddle for his hometown dance,” said Becky Hill, events coordinator for Augusta Heritage Center. “He’s one of the best dance fiddlers you’ll find in this state.”
Mary Alice Milnes will call a mix of big circle dances and four couple set square dances that she has collected throughout the region.
All dances are beginner and family friendly and participants don’t need to come with a dance partner. A beginners’ workshop is set for 7:45 p.m., the square dance starts at 8 p.m.
Admission is $6 for general public, $4 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to Davis & Elkins College students, faculty and staff. Those attending should bring an extra pair of shoes for dancing.
The dance is part of The Mountain Dance Trail, a heritage tourism project of Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, which hosts a square dance almost every weekend in the heart of West Virginia. Square dances are hosted in Elkins the second Friday of each month from September to May. The next Elkins square dance will be on Friday, March 3.
