ELKINS – Davis & Elkins College Curator of Special Collections Mark Lanham will serve as guest speaker Saturday, March 16 as H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion celebrates its 100th birthday. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army, Lanham will discuss the improvements the American Legion has made for veterans rights and benefits.
The event at the Post Home on Railroad Avenue in Elkins begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner at 6 p.m.
A native of Elkins, Lanham graduated from D&E in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sustainability studies and was one of the founding members of the College’s Student Veterans Association. Currently, he serves as the organization’s adviser.
A 1980 graduate of Elkins High School, Lanham served in the U.S. Army until 1982 when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.
During his military career, Lanham earned numerous honors including the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Emirate of Kuwait), Army Service Ribbon and the Army Reserves Overseas Training Ribbon.
The American Legion celebration is open to the public and tickets will be sold in advance at the Post Home and at the door.
