ELKINS – Students entering Davis & Elkins College have a new scholarship opportunity with the endowed Kevin Grant Nestor Memorial Scholarship. Established by Elkins residents and D&E alumni Joyce and Rob Nestor in loving memory of their son, the scholarship is open to students of modest means from Barbour, Grant, Randolph or Tucker counties who exhibit good character, and a kind and helpful heart.

The annual $2,000 scholarship is renewable for four years and will be an addition to the maximum D&E Highlands Scholarship. The funds can be used at the student’s discretion for non-tuition items such as textbooks or other classroom supplies.

“We want to help others and give back to the people of our community where we make a living,” said Rob Nestor, owner of Builders Group Inc. with locations in Elkins, Philippi and Petersburg. Joyce Nestor enrolled as a student at D&E in 1987 and immediately went to work at the College after graduating. Since then, she has served D&E in multiple capacities and is currently the office manager at The Naylor Learning Center.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate good academic and moral standards. Applicants must also submit an essay with examples describing how they exhibit good character and demonstrate a kind, helpful heart.

“Our son had a great big heart and everyone loved him,” Joyce Nestor said. “He was the kind of guy who would help anybody, so we want to select a student for this scholarship who models that.”

Kevin Nestor passed away in 2007. A native of Elkins, he was a 1992 graduate of Elkins High School and an outstanding athlete in a variety of sports. He attended Davis & Elkins College, where he made livelong friends and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

“Doing this is already bringing us joy,” Joyce Nestor said of establishing the scholarship. “We are going to be able to watch this unfold and can’t wait to meet the first recipient this fall.”

Applications are available from high school guidance counselors and at Davis & Elkins College. The completed form and essay must be submitted by July 1 to the Davis & Elkins College Financial Aid Office, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins, WV 26241. Applicants must be available for an in-person interview upon request. A specially selected committee from the Davis & Elkins College community will review the pool of applicants and the recipient will be notified within 60 days of the application closing.
