ELKINS - An afternoon of interfaith fellowship, live entertainment, special speakers and traditional Louisiana-style fare will come together at the Southern Gospel Brunch: Creating a Culture of Peace. The event, organized by Adjunct Instructor Laurie Goux, Catering Assistant Lisa Green and Velma Ragsdale in cooperation with Davis & Elkins College, will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 17 in historic Halliehurst on the College campus.
Tickets are $20 and reservations are required by September 12 by calling Goux at 304-516-9116. A discount is available for seniors and students.
Goux says she created the campus and community event for people of all faiths who share a desire for peace and want to shed light on the topic of being a good neighbor.
“I wanted to include food and music because that’s always a good way to bring people together,” Goux said.
The menu includes creole shrimp and grits, fried chicken tenderloins and waffles, quinoa cakes, pinwheel omelet and bacon rolls and sweet potato tarts, along with orange juice, coffee, sweet tea and water.
Entertainment will be provided by Elizabeth Brown, a D&E student and member of Appalachian Ensemble who will perform liturgical dance; D&E student MacKinzie Smith performing gospel selections on piano; D&E student Denise Folley and alumna Elizabeth Morrison ’16 singing gospel selections; and local musician Geno Austin performing on guitar.
Speaking on the theme of Creating a Culture of Peace will be Davis & Elkins College Benfield-Vick Chaplain the Rev. Laura Brekke, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy at D&E Dr. Bryan Wagoner and the Rev. Jeremiah Jasper, pastor of Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church in Elkins.
Goux says she hopes the Gospel Brunch will become an annual event.
