ELKINS - As Spring Break begins, the Davis & Elkins College International Student Organization is headed south. Traveling by van, the group of 15 students, three chaperones and Director of International Student Services Lowe Del Aviles will make their way to the Sunshine State for a week of sightseeing.
“Everyone is excited, and this is special for nine of the students because it is their first time to travel in the United States,” Aviles said. “When you come from a different country, there are always places in the U.S. that you hear about and see pictures of that create a vision of what America is like. Florida is one of those places. So, for these students to get to go there is really something.”
The students helped plan and budget for the trip that will allow them to visit downtown Disney, Kennedy Space Center, their choice of multiple theme parks and beaches at Clearwater, Daytona and Cocoa. Students will spend the week in a rented house – complete with a hot tub, swimming pool, arcade and home theater – where they will share duties for preparing meals.
“With all of our trips I tend to give the students some responsibilities so they will learn how to make plans and work within a budget,” Aviles explained. “They’ve each been asked to prepare a dish to share at the meals. That also gives them some responsibility.”
Spring break for Davis & Elkins College students begins with the conclusion of classes today and continues throughout next week. Classes resume on Monday, March 12.
