ELKINS - As Davis & Elkins College seniors head down the homestretch to May graduation, accounting majors are taking extra measures to ensure they land a job in their field.

Mentored by Assistant Professor of Accounting Lisa Daniels-Smith, students practice for job interviews, attend West Virginia Society of CPAs annual recruiting fairs, complete required internships and hear advice from accounting professionals. Even after graduation, she continues to assist students in finding employment.

The prep work is not only something Daniels-Smith finds essential, it’s a process that has paid off for students. All of the D&E graduates who earned bachelor’s degrees in accounting last year are working in their chosen profession.

“This is one more example of the D&E family,” Daniels-Smith said. “As professors we aren’t here to simply relay the course information to our students. We are here to help our students achieve goals, whether they are related to the classroom or the real world of employment.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of accountants and auditors is projected to grow 10 percent through 2026, faster than the average for all occupations.

“I must say, accounting has been good to me, and I want others to experience a career that is extremely rewarding,” said Daniels-Smith who has worked in the profession for 25 years. “I believe that giving back is essential and that is why I chose to help educate our next generation. The most recent graduates of the accounting program couldn’t have made me any more proud. They studied hard, took their college education seriously, and kept focused on obtaining employment in the accounting profession.”

The Davis & Elkins College Accounting Program prepares students with a foundation for the communication and analysis of financial information in the business environment. Coursework is designed to promote students’ understanding of accounting theory and their ability to apply accounting principles in the business environment. Students may choose to pursue an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree.
