ELKINS - A couple who has spent their career in the Peace Corps and nonprofit sector will share their experiences during a public lecture from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 8 in Eshleman Science Center 400 on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. The event, presented by the D&E Outdoor Recreation Management program and the Office of Career Services, is free and open to the public.
Nicole Barren-Audette and Christopher Audette will lead the talk titled “The Bush Path Less Traveled By: Four Years in Zambia and Malawi.”
They began their careers as development specialists with the Peace Corps, where they were stationed in a rural village in Zambia. Despite the challenges, they thrived and decided to extend their adventure by managing help2kids, a Swiss nonprofit on the shores of Lake Malawi. They worked as a team, with Barren-Audette contributing knowledge about global heath and women’s issues, while Audette’s areas of expertise include sustainable agriculture, ecology and photography. The pair currently leverage their past experience in international development in southern Africa to manage nonprofits in upstate New York that focus on social and environmental issues in their community.
Barren-Audette is a graduate of Syracuse University and Hartwick College, where she received a Master of Science in child and family health in the global community and a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology. She currently manages the nonprofit Rise-NY, which provides comprehensive domestic violence services.
Audette has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Paul Smith’s College and is executive director of Waterman Conservation Education Center.
