ELKINS – Davis & Elkins College international students and their host families will be in the spotlight as the College joins with the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce for an After Hours reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 21 in Halliehurst.
Davis & Elkins is home to more than 80 international students from 25 countries who share their cultures and customs with the campus and local community. During the academic year, local residents serve as host families by helping students connect with the local community and adapt to our climate and culture, as well as act as their family away from home when special needs arise.
“What is most special is they develop true friendships that are not just limited to the students, but extend to the students’ families,” said D&E’s Director of International Student Services Lowe Del Aviles.
The After Hours event will give guests a chance to meet the students and their host families, and learn about the experiences they share.
“The Chamber’s monthly After Hours is a gathering for Chamber members and community members alike to network and share topics to help create a vibrant community to live, work and play,” said Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Wood. “D&E’s Host Family Program is a wonderful example of the way the College plays an integral part in creating that vibrant community. The international students bring diversity to our community and the Host Family Program offers a way for the community to say, ‘Thank you.’ In turn, the lives of the students and the families who host them are changed forever. Please stop by this free event to see the amazing things happening with D&E’s international students and the Host Family Program.”
The event is free to Chamber members and community members. International food and beverages will be available.
