ELKINS – Victoria Adkins of Manassas, Virginia, has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Davis & Elkins College after participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day on the College campus. Adkins, a student at Charles Colgan High School, was selected from a group of the 54 highest achieving high school seniors accepted to attend D&E this fall.
Adkins is the daughter of Bill Huff and Jayne Adkins of Manassas, Virginia.
As a student at Charles Colgan High School, Adkins has excelled academically and in leadership roles. She was named to the French Honor Society for two consecutive years and was chosen for the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society in her senior year. Adkins is founder and president of the school’s Key Club and has been a member of the Robotics Team for three years, serving one year as vice president. In addition, she is a four-year member of both the varsity co-ed golf team and the varsity girls tennis team.
Students vying for the scholarships submitted essays and participated in interviews with a panel made up of a Davis & Elkins alumnus or alumna, a current student and a faculty member.
To be eligible to compete, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as a leader. The essay of no more than 500 words consisted of a personal statement outlining the students’ interests, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.
