Check in and receive your orientation materials, your room key (if you are a residential student) and other important information. After you have checked in, visit with local merchants and other guests from the Elkins community and explore the many things the local community has to offer the newest members of D&E’s student body. Please note: The check in process takes approximately one hour from start to finish. Members of the fall athletic teams will assist with moving the new students into the residence halls from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Please plan/schedule accordingly.

Welcoming Picnic featuring live music by Neotronic
Take some time to have lunch and meet others. Connect and engage with faculty and staff as you sit back, relax and enjoy the family picnic atmosphere. Hailing from Elkins, Neotronic is an electric three-piece band that performs a mix of electronica, loops, reggae, Latin and jazz.

Matriculation Convocation Processional
All new students will gather in preparation for making a processional walk into Harper-McNeeley Auditorium, much like the walk they will take when they don caps and gowns at Commencement. Faculty will assemble in Eshleman Science Center for the processional. Please note: All first-year students must attend; please wear your “Follow Your Heart” T-shirt.

Matriculation Convocation
Matriculation Convocation is a time-honored and formal ceremony in which members of the Davis & Elkins College Board of Trustees, senior administrators, faculty and staff welcome first-year students to the Davis & Elkins College community. The Matriculation Convocation address will be given by Retired Marine Corporal Brandon Rumbaugh. Over the years, many parents have commented on the specialness of this program. Bring a camera to capture the memories! All first-year students must attend.

President's Reception for New Students, Parents and Family Members
Come as you are and enjoy a chance to connect with President Chris and First Lady Lisa Wood as well as several faculty and staff members. Learn about our family as we learn about yours. Just a short walk from The McDonnell Center parking log or a short drive on Harpertown Road. At the conclusion of the President's Reception at 5:30 p.m., parents and families will say goodbye as the incoming class of 2017 will start a new tradition at Davis & Elkins College. New students and their parents will head down the wooded path from Hearthstone to campus to go their separate ways. Don't miss this special moment. Parents and family members, we look forward to seeing you back on campus during Homecoming and Family Weekend, September 29 - October 1.

Follow Your Heart
First-year students will begin a day of interactive learning experiences designed to encourage thought and reflection about their purpose in life. The day will begin with students meeting their first-year seminar professors on the Plaza. Opening remarks will be given by President Wood and Retired Marine Corporal Brandon Rumbaugh. All first-year students must attend.
The Follow Your Heart initiative is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE). Davis & Elkins College is proud to be affiliated with NetVUE, a nationwide network of colleges and universities formed to enrich the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students. This initiative is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) with generous support from the Lilly Endowment Inc.
