Fasnacht is a West Virginia cultural celebration similar to Mardi Gras or Carnival featuring West Virginia Swiss food, music, dance, masks, a parade and the culmination of Old Man Winter. Helvetia, West Virginia, is an isolated community settled by the Swiss in 1869, 40 miles from Elkins, with a current population of 59.
Students are invited to join this overnight trip departing from campus Saturday, February 10 at 1:30 p.m. and returning Sunday, February 11 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Maximum of 20 students. Food, lodging and travel for students will be provided by D&E's Appalachian Music and Dance Club. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Helvetia Mask Museum and General Store at Kultur Haus Helvetia, enjoy a sampler plate at Hutte Restaurant, take part in an open mic night and dining at Star Band (Red) Hall, watch the Lampion (candlelight) Parade, dance at the Masked Ball at Community Hall and take part in the burning of Old Man Winter outside Community Hall.
