Light the Field Campaign

A good deal of time, planning and resources have changed the D&E athletic fields since the pioneers of Senator Soccer first played together five decades ago. In 2010, the athletic fields were totally upgraded thanks to College Trustee Joyce Allen and her husband, John. In 2013, the new AstroTurf Nuttall Field for soccer and lacrosse was completed. The Allen Athletic Fields now include Nuttall Field, Joni Smith Softball Field, an expanded baseball outfield and Bialek Press Box, and a practice field for soccer and lacrosse. We now need urgently to add lights to Nuttall Field to meet its expanded year-round use.

Nuttall Field RenderingDavis & Elkins College has formed a committee of alumni and friends to complete the second phase of work at Nuttall Field. The Light the Field committee is co-chaired by Bill Nuttall, ’71, and Charlie Straw, ’70, in an effort to raise funds for lights and other amenities.

Both the D&E men's and women's soccer programs have benefited from the turf venue. The Senator men are 11-11-5 at home in three seasons at Nuttall Field, while the women are 18-6-3. With the addition of D&E's two newest sports - men's and women's lacrosse - daylight limitations are a concern and the need for lights to accommodate practice times has come to the forefront. A lighted field will allow student-athletes to spend more time in class because it will create more opportunities to practice and play games later in the day.
