Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science

The purposes of the Department of Sport Science are (1) to provide leadership and facilities for a regular program of instruction and participation in physical activity that will improve the understanding and skill level of all students in a variety of physical activities suitable for both present needs and for lifetime participation; assist individuals in gaining better understanding of the general principles and concepts involved in the fundamentals of effective movement patterns; encourage individuals to improve and maintain physical fitness, (2) to prepare students for teaching careers in physical education, or for careers in such related areas as coaching, youth work, various health fields, sport and athletic programs and management of sport and athletic related businesses, and (3) to provide working knowledge of the physiology of exercise and exercise testing and prescription so that graduates in exercise science may pursue employment in public and privately owned wellness and fitness centers, corporate fitness facilities and clinical therapeutic programs, and be well prepared to continue their formal education at the graduate level.

 

Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science The requirements for the B.S. major in Exercise Science consist of 51 semester hours including:

  • Physical Education 120 - Foundations of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science
  • Physical Education 213 - Exercise Testing and Prescription
  • Physical Education 225 - Safety, First Aid & CPR
  • Physical Education 307 - Kinesiology
  • Physical Education 308 - Measurement in Health and Physical Education
  • Physical Education 309 - Physiology of Exercise
  • Physical Education 310 - Stress Testing
  • Physical Education 314 - Research Methods and Interpretations
  • Physical Education 394 - Practicum (3 semester hours)

Additional requirements are:

  • Biology 107 - Human Anatomy
  • Biology 108 - Human Physiology
  • Chemistry 108 - Basic Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 115 - Basic Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 116 - Basic Chemistry II Laboratory
  • Math 193 - College Algebra
  • Nursing 107 - Nutrition
  • Psychology 200 or 221 - Life Span Development or Adulthood and Aging

Also required is the completion of one of the following:

  • An academic minor other than athletic training
  • Completion of the emphasis in athletic training which requires the following courses:
    • Physical Education 207 - Athletic Training
    • Physical Education 316 - Advanced Athletic Training
    • Physical Education 317 - Therapeutic Modalities
    • And at least three courses from the following:
      • HLTH 107 - Health Concepts
      • PSYC 232 - Health and Wellness
      • PHED 301 - Psychosocial Aspects of Sport
      • PHED 305 - Organization and Administration
      • PHED 315 - The Law in Sport and Physical Education
  • Completion of the Pre-Professional Specialization in Pre-Physical Therapy. Additional requirements included with the major are:
    • Biology 101 - Principles of Biology I
    • Biology 102 - Principles of Biology II
    • Physics 251 - Physics I
    • Physics 252 - Physics II
    • Chemistry 120 - Fundamentals of Chemistry I
    • Chemistry 121 - Chemical Laboratory Principles I
    • Chemistry 122 - Fundamentals of Chemistry II
    • Chemistry 123 - Chemical Laboratory Principles II

 

Minor in Exercise Science The requirements for a minor in exercise science consist of 20 semester hours including:

  • Physical Education 213 - Exercise Testing and Prescription
  • Physical Education 309 - Physiology of Exercise
  • Physical Education 310 - Stress Testing
  • Biology 107 - Human Anatomy
  • Biology 108 - Human Physiology

In addition, three semester hours chosen from:

  • Nursing 107 - Nutrition
  • Physical Education 225 - Safety, First Aid & CPR
  • Physical Education 308 - Measurement in Health and Physical Education
  • Physical Education 314 - Research Methods and Interpretation
  • Psychology and Human Services 200 or 221 - Life Span Development or Adulthood and Aging

The Davis & Elkins College Department of Sport Science held a free public event with U.S. strength and conditioning coach Allan Johnson in Harper-McNeeley. Johnson, is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame.
