Department Philosophy

The philosophy of the Chemistry Department is to provide students with a sound education and quality instruction comparable to that of larger institutions while benefiting from individualized attention.

Chemistry is theoretical but also rather experimental. Therefore, the department is committed to providing students with ample laboratory experience in order to develop the tools necessary to become successful experimentalists. This is accomplished in courses and through individual projects with faculty.

Chemists need to be able to effectively communicate their ideas to their peers and to society. An emphasis on the development of writing and oral skills through laboratory reports, oral presentations and research papers helps our majors gain experience in communication.

The department has placed emphasis on student involvement in research which provides opportunities for training and enrichment that go beyond the lecture laboratory course. In addition, this allows students more interaction with faculty and gives students a taste of what it is like to do scienc
e.
