Appalachian Studies
The Appalachian Studies program seeks to promote awareness about the cultural and environmental heritage of the Appalachian region within the context of the modern world. In accordance with the liberal arts mission of the college, the interdisciplinary program represents the commitment of Davis & Elkins College to the region that is its home. Students in the program will be provided with historical context and sufficient background to address contemporary issues related to living and working in the Appalachian region. Students may design their own Appalachian Studies major with the Contract Degree program.
Degree Requirements
Minor in Appalachian Studies
The requirements for a minor in Appalachian Studies consist of a minimum of 18 credit hours, including:
- History 210 - Appalachian History
- English 151 - Appalachian Literature
- Environmental Science 214 - Natural History of Appalachia
- Sociology 220 - Appalachian Cultures and Traditions
The remaining 6 credit hours may be chosen from:
- Art 106A - Fiber Arts
- Art 143 - The Arts in WV and Appalachia
- Heritage Arts 150 & 250 - Crafts
- Heritage Arts 160 & 260 - Traditional Music & Dance
- Heritage Arts 173 - White Oak Basket Making
- Heritage Arts 174 - Applied Appalachian String Band Music
- Heritage Arts 175 - Appalachian Flatfooting & Clogging
- Heritage Arts 180 & 280 - Folklore
- History 211 - West Virginia History
- History 251 - Southern History 1930-1976
- Music 150-169 - Beginning Level Music
- Music 250-269 - Intermediate Level Music
- Music 350-369 - Advanced Level Music
Music courses must be taken with instruments played in traditional Appalachian styles such as Old-Time or Bluegrass fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, etc.
