"Judaism Is NOT a Religion"
Dr. Ronald Brauner

D&E recently hosted the 2011 Phipps Lecturer, Dr. Ronald Brauner, faculty member with the
Wexner Heritage Foundation; President of the Foundation for Jewish Studies; and
Professor and Chair of Judaic Studies for the Siegal College of Judaic Studies.
A leading scholar in Judaic Studies, Rabbi Brauner visited
the Davis & Elkins College campus for two days, sharing his insights with
classes as well as the community. The author of nine books and serials and more
than 30 journal articles and reviews, Rabbi Brauner is a highly sought-after
authority on Judaic history and texts. He holds degrees from Temple University
(Philadelphia), Hiyam Greenberg College (Jerusalem), and Dropsie University
(Philadelphia), where he received the PhD with distinction.
Rabbi Brauner
has served on the staff, faculty and boards of numerous organizations: Jewish
Theological Seminary, Temple University, Akiba Hebrew Academy, Brandeis-Bardin
Institute, the Hebrew Institute of Pittsburgh, and others. He has received major
grants from the Exxon Education Foundation, Bell of Pennsylvania, and
Philadelphia National Bank. His special projects include the annual series
“Bioethics and the Jewish Tradition,” co-sponsored by the Case Western Reserve
School of Medicine, Department of Bioethics and Cleveland Mount Sinai Healthcare
Foundation.
The Phipps Lectureship was established at Davis & Elkins
College in 1995 in honor of Dr. William E. Phipps, Professor Emeritus of
Religion and Philosophy at Davis & Elkins College. Each year, it brings
accomplished scholars from a wide range of backgrounds to campus to provide
opportunities for sharing ideas and experiences in religion, philosophy and
related disciplines.
